Only good to show that you're somewhere between full and add.īTW - somewhere I've got an archived email from subaru that says +/- 1 quart is fine. Trying to read it hot and get a precise reading, at least on the OBW's is useless.

But the readings are repeatable, and consistent. For some really, really, strange reason, my car is about 1/8" below the hole for the F and my wife's is exactly at the hole for the F. Let it set a few minutes and its apt to read anyplace between L and F.ĭrive it for the rest of the day, then I let it set overnight and get a fresh reading in the morning.

I now drain, put the plug lightly back in, remove the filter, remove the plug again and another cup or so comes out, then prefill the filter with a cup or so, install the filter, torque down the plug, and add 4 qts and 1 cup. Want to climb the mountains on Mars I mean, if that’s your kink then it’s all yours. I've found trying to get an accurate reading after an oil change to be so frustrating, I just gave up. Peak sport is about watching someone superhuman doing things that you could never hope to do. I'm lucky in that the cars are always exactly in the same spot in the garage, so I don't have to worry about the angle being wrong. The only way I can get a reliable reading is to get a reading first thing in the morning. Didn't really have this much trouble on our previous 2 Subie's, an 03 OBW and an 04 FXT, but reading the stick on the 08 OBW's stinks, and if the Forester has the same pan, I can see why the confusion. The way the stick is angled into the pan makes it tough - look on one side you get one reading, look on the other and its higher (or lower - depends which side you look on first). I'm even trying to explain this phenom to myself, but I don't believe it for a minute.something is weird here. One thing I thought of is that if the crankcase has a little pressure in it, it could conceivably push the oil higher in the dipstick tube, reading a higher level, and when you pull the stick, it breaks the vacuum and lets oil fall to its natural level.

And the one on my Ford van is 12 feet long, matte, and somehow still hard to read. I had a Mazda Protege5 with that cable dipstick thing which I didn't really like, and my wife's '07 Civic has an ORANGE PLASTIC dipstick that I keep fearing will melt into the oil pan someday, or snap off, or something. I mean, on the Subaru, we're talking maybe a half inch, not a few mm. But if capillary action is such a big thing, the Log Cabin syrup in the kitchen cabinet would be climbing the sides of its bottle and it just doesn't, at least very much. The matte finish on the stick makes the level more obvious (because you can see a big diff in the matte stick vs the oily wet part). Click to expand.Well, as a longtime dipstick user (my first car was a '65 Sunbeam Alpine that went through a quart of oil every 2-300 miles), I am still doubtful about the capillary action playing that big a role.
